In the book 1Q84, it starts off with a woman named Aomame who is late for work one day and she decides to take a different route, little did she know that it would change the nature of reality. For some reason, her first instinct is to proceed with a murder. Aomame starts to experience crazy things and slowly starts to recognize new details about the world. She starts to come to conclusion that she is living in an alternate reality.
1) Does something in a story have to happen for the characters to enter a dystopian world or can they already be in it from the beginning?
2) Are different "realms" in stories considered dystopian?
3) Can dystopia occur in different times? Past or future?
You must decide on the characteristics of dystopian literature. Are there any commonalities with regard to character archetypes or setting or plot?
